i want to talk about the unsolved murder rate in the city and county of san francisco. it's over 1,000 unsolved murders. i got out of navy when officer mcdonald was killed by a pipe-bomb, which is one unsolved murder going over 30 something years. eric mar, went on record supporting exonerate the killers and sponsored legislation because the murders were so long ago she should be forgiven. i don't think any murder in this country should be forgiven under any circumstances at any time. we all run into a problem with the police department and sometimes we have problems with them and sometimes we have battles with them, but nothing justifies murdering a policemen when he is doing his job and letting the murderers go free and then having legislators at city hall at the board of supervisors run on a mandate that doesn't even mention or have the media talk about it. that that man sponsored legislation that let four murderers off the hook because it was so long ago. i think anybody here or anybody listening tonight should one, thank you warren hinkle for coming out with an art

future of the city. we were with a smaller group earlier. i will stress that san francisco is a city with a dichotomy going on. in many ways, we are a cutting edge city in terms of technology, food, transportation, there are all sorts of things where we are ahead of the curve. we attract a lot of people like you who are forward-thinking and want to do things in a different and more innovative way. we're also a really old school city. the change is challenging. david and i talk about this a lot. we're trying to do things differently. we get a lot of reflexive push back, whether you are talking about cars sharing on streets, or changing zoning to create new housing to make the city more affordable and inclusive. you have those kinds of difficult conversations. so much of this is about educating the city as a whole from all generations and perspectives. our housing policies and transportation systems are not always sustainable. if we want to remain a cutting edge and diversity that draws all sorts of people

[music]. thanks to the stern grove association they renovated the concert meadow. it used to be a rolling grafsy area. put in a new stage and stage building. they put in terraces. we get from 8,000 to 12,000 people. and the meadow next to the concert meadow is full of people even though they can't see the music they hear it. i walked into the meadow several times and they don't even care. we do have literally events going on day and night. the concert association has kids days during the week. the performers come out for hundred 200 kids. now, the truckadero truc

i paid the police department and the city back. we put this together with a group of volunteerses, the original command center. the wonderful volunteers that exist in san francisco. not people advising you but people coming here doing stuff and they represented the great cross section of san francisco. had two retired school teachers who came to this temporary building everyday for five years, and provided administrative assistance. they were wonderful. one of them was mary louise green. dave ebberly -- you haven't heard that name. he was the guy bouncing around and i found out he was the volunteer driver of the emergency vehicle that we had which was parked in a fire house at the other end of the city and get a call at 2:00 o'clock in the morning and get in that vehicle, and i later learned -- i'm sorry dave. i didn't understand at the time. it was manual transmission and manual brakes and i wish i could have hired him and he he is and somebody was smart enough to bring him with when they had sufficient funds. i was assisted by th

i've spent nearly 8 months working on this legislation with the police department, the city attorney's office, junk dealers and the community members with the goal of curbing and better regulating the sale of metals, copper and other junk materials. now, metals theft is a significant problem in our city. if you recall, there was very much media coverage of it earlier this year. we have seen individuals go to great lengths to steal copper and metal by breaking into public housing units, homes, businesses, as well as historic buildings. we've seen metal thiefs sail small boats and even pull copper line from the cable lines. not only does metal theft cost thousands of dollars in damage but it can disrupt the delivery of critical transit services. unfortunately some metal thiefs have an incentive to engage in this dangerous behavior. junk dealers who buy and sell these materials often pay up to $4 per pound for metal and copper. while several junk dealers provide a service to local residents and contractors by allowing them to recycle lawfully obtained items, our police department has cond
